SYNOPSIS
A film is inspired by a true story about Kumanthong.
Soi is a deaf – mute girl living in a village deep in the heart of the Mekong Delta, until one day a stranger arrives on a boat down river. The stranger, Luu Huynh, who claims to be a shaman and healer, quickly wins the attention and admiration of the village after miraculously healing one of the locals. Soi immediately catches Huynh’s eyes, and she becomes enchanted by him, unlike anything she has ever experienced. This bond soon blossoms into a romance and they soon married. However, the beautiful dream of Soi soon becomes a nightmare when she eventually discovers her new husband’s dark past and his plan for immortality that involves human sacrifice and the conjuring of the dead.
THE SPIRIT
Throughout history, one of the darkest and most relentlessly persistent of human fears has been that of possession – Kumanthong. It is famous in Indochina such as Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Cambodia. Dealing with the occult and supernatural is deeply rooted in Asian culture. However serial murderis certainly not part of our culture and has not manifested itself as strongly and violently as other countries in Indochina.
The origin of making Kuman Thong seems to be found in the folk legend Khun Chang Khun Phaen (Thailand), which is based on the life of a soldier in the Ayutthaya era. In the story, Khun Phaen makes the first Kuman Thong from the fetus of his dead wife’s unborn child. Hyper-realistic dolls of children (but not made out of real children), “Luk Thep” or “Look Thep” (“child angel”), have recently (2015) become popular in Thailand. Some people believe the dolls can be injected with the spirit of a child after being blessed by a Buddhist monk. Their owners provide such care as food, water and clothes “in
the hope of receiving good fortune in return”, and some companies offer owners of the dolls the option to reserve them their own seats and services.
Besides that, there is a unique case from Indonesia: Kumanthong killer started killing from 1982 to 1997. It was the story of Ahmad Suradji, a mystic healer (also known as shaman) who killed 42 women and drank their saliva in a bid to enhance his divine powers of healing. Given the levels of economic instability and superstition of the people in that area he was able tomanipulate vulnerable women, desperate for an answer to their problems. His victims ranged in age from 17 to 40, and were strangled after being buried up to their waists in the ground as part of a ritual. He buried his victims in a sugarcane plantation near his home, with their heads facing his house, which he believed would give him extra power. Suradji, a cattle-breeder, was also known as Nasib Kelewang, or by his alias Datuk. He told police that he had a dream in 1986 in which his father’s ghost directed him to drink the saliva of 70 dead, young women, so that he could become a mystic healer. Suradji thought that it would take him too long to encounter 70 dead women singly and so he took up the initiative to kill. As a sorcerer, or dukun, women came to him for spiritual advice, making themselves more beautiful or richer or so he could cast a spell on their spouses so they’ll never have an affair. He would take them into a sugarcane field and bury them up to their waist, claiming it was part of the ritual. He would then strangle them until they were dead and proceed to drink their saliva. After, he would strip the clothes from their bodies to accelerate decomposition and bury them back into the ground with their heads pointing toward his house.
In Vietnam: Kumanthong killer started killing from 1997 to 2002.
More than 15 years ago, at Dong Thap Province, a 54 years old man named Pham Van Tan (or Hai Tung) claimed to be a shaman and healer. He lived on a boat down river. Since his boat landed at the village, he quickly won the attention and admiration after miraculously healing the locals but didn’t take the money. More and more people knew him and came to his house to cure. But he lived quite eccentric. During the day, Hai Tung’s house was closed, only his wife – Tran Thi The (a 42 years old woman) came and brought him food everyday. The eccentric nature of master Hai Tung caught the curiosity of the villagers, his wife later revealed that he was mastering the dark art called “Kumanthong”. He concealed his despicable evil doings under a cover of a physician. He learnt Kumanthong which used placenta to manipulate the dead. He presumed that accumulating as much women’s genitals as possible will fasten his training. So when the women in the village came to his house, he killed them then the vile shaman raped the victim’s bodies and burried them under his backyard. After beheading his victim, he then stew their heads with a big pot. Finally, when he was arrested, policeman found
three decapitated bodies match with three heads found in his house.
Other stories:
Many Laotians also believe that charms made by the fetus also bring good luck. In 2011, a case was reported in Laos of a man murdering his pregnant wife, so as to use the foetus as a “Louk Lord”. Lao police arrested a 38-year-old man in Xieng Khouang province who claimed that he wanted to use the fetus to enchant Kuman Thong with the hope that help him win the jackpot. Therefore, he took his wife to the forest near the house, used a hammer to kill his wife and then took an abdomen to take a 3-month-old fetus. Despite having a talisman, but not having seen the number yet, only this delusional murderer had to spend the rest of his life in prison to pay for his greed and superstition.
On May 18, 2012 a 28-year-old British citizen of Taiwanese origin, Chow Hok Kuen, was arrested in a Bangkok hotel room with six male fetuses that had been roasted and covered in gold. Police reported that Kuen intended to sell the fetuses in Taiwan for about 6,300 USD each.

3. SETH TSUI (Film Composer) started his career as a composer by winning the most prestigious international film composing competition, the Marvin Hamlisch Film Scoring Contest for Emerging Composers 2013. As a complete beginner, he won by demonstrating his talent in scoring a short animated film better than 300 more experienced composers, with his score chosen based on the strength of the music alone. Seth went on to develop his skills working in Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions, where he became the technical lead for Heitor Pereira’s studio, and worked on projects such as the 《Despicable Me》and 《Minions》series for Illumination and Universal Pictures. In 2017, Seth moved to Beijing China, where he built his own 100 square meter music studio in the heart of Beijing’s Gaobeidian movie district. From 2018-2019 he was the lead composer for films:《验伤》《Summer Can Wait》,《亲爱的，我要和别人结婚了》,《Year of the Dog》,《Kumanthong》, games: 《冲顶大会》 ,《Ever Adventure》,《铁血舰队》and three ad campaigns for the robotics company DJI. CHARACTERS AND CAST
HOANG YEN CHIBI plays Soi
Soi is a 25-year old village girl with large, intense eyes, who was born deaf, but the whole town assumes that she is also a mute. She is the only daughter of Bac, the local duck farmer who has a bad gambling problem. Her mother died after giving birth to her, so she also carries the stigma of being “bad luck”. All of her life she has been regarded as dumb just because of her deafness, but she is not. She can sign with her hands to communicate and she observes everything.
Hoang Yen Chibi was born in 1995. She was working as a singer, actress and model in Ho Chi Minh City. She began her career at the age of 6 by taking part in art activities. She is known for her excellent acting. After achieving runner-up of the “Star Academy” competition, she headed South to pursue her passion. A role in the smash-hit drama-comedy “Go Go Sisters” followed in 2018 has brought her name to a wider-range of audiences.

QUANG TUAN plays Luu Huynh
Luu Huynh is a 35-year old man who drifts from town to town on his boat, claiming to be a fortune teller and healer. Though not handsome, he has a charming face and knows how to use words to get what he wants. Like a gypsy, his eyes are very sharp, and he can read people’s personality and uses that knowledge to his advantage. Huynh’s mother was a nurse who worked with the handicapped, so he is very familiar with western medicine, and even learned sign language when he was young. However, Huynh also learned to be a shaman in Cambodia, so he is also knowledgeable with herbal medicine. He is a firm believer in Kumanthong, which is a black magic practice that relies on human sacrifice in order to gain immortality.
Quang Tuan, a Vietnamese actor who has enjoyed a wide-spread popularity among Southern Vietnamese. He usually plays the main role in some theatrical play such as “Cong Me Di Choi, Chuyen Hai Chang, Hai Chang Bao Mau, Am Khuya, Hoa Hau, Tinh Yeu Noi Loan”. With an ideal height, a good-looking appearance and his tremendous effort in acting, he’s always loved by the audiences for
his realistic acting. His recent appearance in “A Song To The Sun” had a big impact on viewers. Now he’s working at “Youth World” theater.

Up until now, he has been working in the showbiz for more than 10 years, although he’s a young actor but he stands out as a pioneer for a generation of young gifted actors.
DINH Y NHUNG plays A Mui
A Mui is a 39-year old jewelry shop owner in the town, whose husband left her for some 20-year old girl when he discovered that she cannot have children. This is why A Mui hates pretty girls in their 20s, but tries so hard to look young herself, and dresses to get attention. She owns a jewelry
shop by the market, so she has money. She is not scared of black magic and is not shy when it comes to men, as long as they serve her needs, which are attention and power.
Dinh Y Nhung was born in 1980. She is a H’rê people and an actress in Vietnam. In 1999, Dinh Y Nhung attended the looking for fashion beauties competition and won the most beautiful face prize. In “Miss Vietnam 2000”, Dinh Y Nhung won the most beautiful traditional dress award. It was the beauty contests that brought her to acting. From then on, she was invited by the director to participate in films. Some of the movie that has made her name famous like “Nu Bac Si, Nga Re, Xom Ga, Duong Ho Chi Minh Tren Bien,…”. Especially the role “Lua” from the movies “Lay Chong Nguoi Ta” directed by her husband – director Luu Huynh has create her own attraction towards the audiences.

KIEU TRINH plays Mrs. Tu
Mrs. Tu is in her 40s, she is the owner of the 1 café in the village. She is bossy and crude. Mrs. Tu is very used to get her way, but she also has a forked tongue. Her redeeming quality is that she will do anything for her daughter, Yen. She finds many ways to cure Yen and accidentally believed in Huynh’s evil trick.
Kieu Trinh is considered as one of the most devoted artist for the sake of art. Her sacrifice for the role helped Kieu Trinh write her name in the history of cinema after the movie “Bi, Don’t Be Afraid (2011)”, “Black Forest (2008)”, “Buffalo boy (2005) won many international films awards. Her struggle to get the main role in “Buffalo Boy” which had later on catapulted her into stardom. After the success of this film, Kieu Trinh became a prominent name to be directed by the director. Over the past 15 years, Kieu Trinh has participated in a number of hit movies and TV series. She can play a wide-range of role in the movies.
THANH TU plays Yen
Yen is a 22-year old daughter of the village café owner, Mrs. Tu. Yen is married to Nam. She recently gave birth to a still born, so Yến was very depressed until she was “treated” by Huỳnh. Unlike her bitchy mother, Yen is a sweet girl, but because of the loss of her child, she is very superstitious and vulnerable to suggestions of black magic.
Thanh Tu was born in 1997 – the daughter of actress Kieu Trinh. She also pursue the acting career as her mother. She used to play in many feature films and TV series such as “ Go Go Sisters”, “Gentle”, “Ghost Friend”, “Rom”, “11 hopes”,…

THANH MY plays Gui
Gui is a 15-year old lottery seller, who is Sỏi’s cousin. She grew up in an orphanage in the town, where she also learned sign language. A child of the street, she has a lot of street smart and a sharp tongue. However, because she is an orphan she has a unique bond with Soi.
Thanh My was born in 2005 but she is already the No. 1 movie and commercials star with more than 40 commercials, 10 TV series and she is also a MC and voice actress. She appeared in a variety of dramas and movies. With the movie “Yellow Flowers On The Green Grass, Thanh My had the attention of a wide-range of audience. Her naïve appearance is perfectly suited in to a children’s movie with positive, meaningful message. With her photogenic face and realistic acting, Thanh My has a lot of companies invite her to advertise for their products. Achievements/Awards:

LE HUYNH plays Bac
Bac is a 45-year old single father of Soi. After his wife died from childbirth, Bac drowned his misery in alcohol and developed a gambling problem. He raises fighting cocks and goes across the border to bet on cockfights, but he always loses. He used to take Sỏi across the river on the ferry to learn how to sign when she was little, but as she grew older and his drinking and gambling got worse, he lost touch with her. His one redeeming quality is that she loves Sỏi, but he just doesn’t know how to show it. He hopes one day his rooster will win so that that he can pay off his debts.
TAN THI plays Sang
Sang is in his 50s, he is the older villager who likes to sniff tobacco powder. He got lucky some years back and found a lot of gold on his land. Everyone tells him that there’s no gold left on his land, but Sang won’t give up. He’s too old, so he’s always looking for a younger man to continue mining.
LA THANH plays Tam
In his 30s, Tam never goes anywhere without his buddy Bap. The two of them are the village gossip. They sit around Mrs. Tu’s café all day long because they are dirt robbers who steal dirt in the middle of the night and sell it. Of the two, Tam is the one with the sarcastic mouth. We can either cast someone fat or someone tall.

BA TAY plays Bap
Younger than Tam, Bap is the little buddy who loves to eat corn and echoes everything his big brother says. If Tam is fat then Bap is skinny. If Tam is tall then Bap is short. He’s more of the simpleton between the two friends.
Ba Tay is a comedian. He is known for participating in the show “Tuyet Chieu Sieu Dien” .
